Different classes of dynamic models of traffic networks will be presented, based on various assumptions about the architecture for information exchange among the decision makers. Real time control problems are considered and possible control schemes are presented. The application of such schemes is discussed also with respect to the computational requirements and the needs for communication. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The objective of this course is that of providing the student with the conceptual and methodological tools necessary to model vehicle traffic systems and to define and solve control problems for these systems. In particular, at the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the nature of the different models that can be adopted and to select the most suitable model for any specific case study. Besides, the student will learn how to define performance optimization and real-time control problems, to be solved by applying specific software tools. ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam has the objective of checking and evaluating the capability of the student to solve modelling and control problems for traffic systems, analogous to those presented during the lessons and solved within the computer exercises. The exam will also test the acquisition of the basic concepts and methods provided by the course.
