LEARNING OUTCOMES

To learn how to use computers and some application programs through theoretical lessons and hands-on exercises. In particular, basic notions about the usage of computers in scientific applications (hardware, software, information, representation, text editors, spreadsheets, and presentations) are provided in this course.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to introduce the students to the use of the LibreOffice suite (in particular the Calc spreadsheet), aiming to make them capable of:

  • using Calc to process and display data, such as those acquired from databases available on the internet.
  • use Write to produce simple scientific documents.
  • use Impress to produce simple scientific presentations.

PREREQUISITES

To use spreadsheets properly, the student should have basic mathematical, reasoning, and analytical skills, typically covered by mathematics courses in the first year.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching takes place over 10-12 weeks, including either 2 hours of classroom lessons or guided laboratory.

During the semester there will be two assessments during class time (with booking and submission on AulaWeb) and home exercises (working in a group).

"Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sara Ferrando (sara.ferrando@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison.”

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course includes introductory lessons followed by guided workshops on how to

  • process and visualize data using Calc
  • prepare documents using Writer
  • prepare presentations using Impress

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The teaching material (including any video recordings) will be made available on aulaweb.

It is also possible to consult and download the documentation in English on LibreOffice from https://documentation.libreoffice.org/en/english-documentation
