AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Learning of the basics of the analytical procedure and of the methods of chemical analysis, considering the different aspects, from sampling to analysis, with an in-depth study of the instrumental techniques of greatest interest in the environmental field. The final objective of the course, together with the course of Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, is to teach the student the analytical approach, providing the tools to understand the problems related to a chemical analysis. At the end of the course, students must be able to: - classify and describe the types of chemical equilibrium (acid-base, precipitation, complexation, oxidation-reduction), predicting the possible influences of different equilibria on each other; perform some simple numerical calculations and interpret the related graphs - describe the various analytical techniques covered and the related instruments in technical language, with particular reference to spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques, demonstrating knowledge of their functioning and possible applications - use the graphs obtained from the instrumental analysis to obtain qualitative and quantitative information on the chemical species studied PREREQUISITES Fundamentals of Chemistry (first year course) TEACHING METHODS Class attendance is strongly recommended, even if not mandatory. The course consists of lectures in Italian during which students are encouraged to intervene with questions and personal considerations. The slides of the lessons and any educational material for further information are published and made available on AULAWEB "Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sara Ferrando (sara.ferrando@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison.” SYLLABUS/CONTENT Chemical equilibria in aqueous solutions. Introduction to titration methods. Introduction to electroanalytical methods. Introduction to spectroscopy. Molecular UV/Vis spectrophotometry. Atomic spectroscopy (AAS and ICP-OES). Refer to the detailed timetable below link: https://easyacademy.unige.it/portalestudenti/ Class schedule ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION Students wishing to take the exam must book at least two days in advance on: https://servizionline.unige.it/studenti/esami/prenotazione The exam is oral (except in the case that a large number of student is registered, when a preliminary suitability test can be carried out); it has a duration of about 30-40 minutes and includes questions on subjects specified in the program that is illustrated to students and deposited on AulaWeb, together with the material shown in class and other in-depth material. The student will have to demonstrate the achievement of the educational objectives both by exposing the topics orally and by writing down possible chemical reactions, formulas, graphs and diagrams related to the questions. If the commission considers that these objectives have not been achieved, the student will be asked to withdraw. ASSESSMENT METHODS The oral test is aimed at assessing the knowledge and understanding of the subject, based on the training objectives described above; the ability to link the various topics is evaluated. The exam is always conducted by two tenured professors and is conducted in such a way as to evaluate not only if the student has acquired the required knowledge, but also if he has deeply understood the topics and if he is able to apply them to simple analytical problems. Considering that at least one of the two professors has many years of teaching experience in the discipline, the commission is able to accurately verify the achievement of the educational objectives of teaching. If these are not reached, the student is invited to deepen the study and, if necessary, to ask further explanations to the teacher.
