OVERVIEW

The course aims at providing students with the economic skills necessary to evaluate policies on the exploitation of scarce resources and their sustainability with particular reference to marine ecosystems and the Blue Economy in general.

The course aims at providing students with the economic skills necessary to evaluate policies on the exploitation of scarce resources and their sustainability with particular reference to marine ecosystems and the Blue Economy in general.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at providing students with the fundamental and preparatory knowledge for the in-depth analysis of the functioning of the complex system of economic actors that constitute the sea economy. Particular attention will be given to the emerging sectors of the blue economy in a logic of environmental sustainability.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of lectures, practical exercises and small group activities aimed at consolidating acquired knowledge and self-assessment of the level of learning and understanding.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The blue economy in the general economic context (investment, spatial planning, labour market).

Typical economic sectors of the sea economy (living marine resources, non-living marine resources, marine renewable energy, port activities, shipbuilding and ship repair, maritime transport, coastal tourism).

Emerging economic sectors of the blue economy (ocean energy, marine biotechnology, desalination, defence, maritime security and surveillance, research and development, maritime infrastructure).

The European green deal and the sustainable blue economy.

Environment and marine ecosystem services.

Regional and international economic analyses on economic and environmental sustainability indicators.
