Theoretical module: overview of lexicology and syntax: Analysis of the lexical unit belonging to the general language (lemma); Main syntactic aspects of the French language. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims: - to give all students an intermediate degree of proficiency (B2), both written and spoken, in French and to provide them with an in-depth cultural knowledge of French; - to enable all students to acquire intermediate text analysis skills; - to enable all students to acquire advanced translation skills; - to provide all students with a basic foundation in oral mediation. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course will focus on: - knowledge of lexicology and syntax of the French language ; - general theoretical skills in these areas ; - the ability to express themselves properly and to manipulate the language PREREQUISITES Students will have to possess language competences in French of level B1. They will be able to sit for the second year exam only if they have passed the first year one. Teamwork. During presential lessons, and according to the number of students that regularly attend lessons, active participation will be encouraged and team work aiming at discovering variation phenomena and analyzing them will be encouraged. The attendance of students who speak other languages is encouraged as it will be an enrichment for the course. The lettorato is annual. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course is made of two parts: “Modulo teorico” and “esercitazioni linguistiche” Modulo teorico: French lexicology - lexical semantics - Lexical morphology Lexicography - history of French dictionaries - typology of the dictionaries - structure of the dictionaries Overview of French syntax - types of sentence - simple sentences, compound sentences, and complex sentences: - Syntax operations Esercitazioni linguistiche : Thème, Version, Morphosyntaxe, Manipulation du texte oral The syllabus for frequent and non-attending students is the same. Written test. Esercitazioni linguistiche: grammar, translation and oral manipulation test. ASSESSMENT METHODS Modulo teorico: written paper (2h) with linguistics exercises aiming at assessing: knowledge of theoretical content; its application to specific activities. The exam will consist in a paper organized in several questions on: lexical morphology; lexical semantics; syntax. Practical exercises: practical exams will aim at assessing students’ knowledge in the domain of French lexicography and syntax, and their ability to apply this knowledge to practical exercises.
