OVERVIEW

The course is organized in four modules:

The "modulo teorico" will deal with variation phenomena within the French speaking world. 

The other three modules are: literary translation from French into Italian, specialized translation from French into Italian, introduction to oral mediation.

 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student will have acquired knowledge and competences for metalinguistic analysis and textual and discursive anlaysis, including language for specific purposes. Knowledge and practical linguistic competences in written and oral mediation between French (level C1) and Italian will also be acquired through practical exercises with native speakers and mediation professionals.

Learning outcomes
- to acquire knowledge about variation phenomena;
- to identify and interpret such phenomena in French and Italian;
- to be able to manipulate and translate texts with variations;

- to be able to translate literary and specialized texts.

PREREQUISITES

Students will have to posess language competences in French of level B2.

They will be able to sit for the third year exam only if they have passed the second year one. For further information, see the exams regulations on the French section page (www.lingue.unige.it).

TEACHING METHODS

The theoretical module is divided into 30 presential hours + 6 workshop hours on Aulaweb for the translation of a section of the novel Libecciu. Calvi in the wind, by Petr'Antò Scolca.

Practical exercises will include interpreting, specialized translation and literary translation.

During presential lessons, and according to the number of students that regularly attend lessons, active participation will be encouraged and groupwork aiming at discovering variation phenomena and anlyzing them will be encouraged. The attendance of students who speak other languages is encouraged as it will be an enrichment for the course.

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The programme will include reading, analysis and translation of different texts, that may belong to different genres and media: literature, comics, theatre, etc.

Detailed programme:

- diatopic variation : France and French-speaking world, French in Africa (Maghreb and Subsaharian Africa ), in America (Québec, Acadie, Louisiana), in DROM (Antilles, Réunion) (the North American area will be focused on);

- diamesic variation : written and spoken French;

- diaphasic and diastratic variation : informal French, vernaculaire urbain contemporain.

The programme for students who can't follow lessons and for those who are able to follow is the same.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The theoretical module exam aims at verifying the acquisition of theoretical knowledge about linguistic variation in French and the ability to apply this knowledge to the specific analysis and translation of a text. The student will have to be able to identify and analyze the phenomena that appear in a specific text, using theoretical knowledge in an appropriate way, and translate the text.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Theoretical module: the written exam (3 hours) aims at assessing he acquisition by the students of theoretical knowledge in the field of French language variation and the ability to apply this knowledge to the analysis and translation of a text. The student will have to prove to be able to:

  • identify variation phenomena in the text given for the exam;
  • organize them in a structured way and analyze them;
  • sum up basical theoretical knowledge. Without the demonstration he/she possesses this knowledge the mark will not be higher than 26/30;
  • translate the text into Italian by treating in the correct way variation phenomena;
  • critically reflect on their own translation practice.

Exams pertaining to practical exercises will test the ability to translate oral and written texts, to interact with other speakers in a professional setting, to reformulate, to use specialized terminology, at level C1.

Assessment criteria: quality and clarity of language, correct use of specialist vocabulary, ability to critically reason about the study undertaken, ability to use the technical and theoretical tools provided.

In the absence of theoretical references in the examination paper, the maximum mark will be 26/30.

The inscription to Aulaweb is compulsory. The inscription to the exams is compulsory and available up to 3 working days before the exam (if not otherwise specified).
