AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the rehabilitation of a partially or totally edentulous patient with the various types of prostheses.  At the end of the course, the student must:. - a thorough knowledge of the materials and methods required to make a fixed or removable denture on natural teeth. - have acquired the correct terminology for the identification of the various types of prostheses and the components of the prostheses and for the description of the procedures necessary for their implementation in appropriate language. - know how to manage the relationship with the dental team and the communication with the patient and with the dental laboratory in order to achieve a correct prosthetic rehabilitation

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal and interactive lessons. Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the School/Department before class begins, in order to arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning outcomes.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Introduction to the prosthesis: fixed, mobile, fixed-mobile. The working phases:  Design,  Execution procedures. Pre-protective evaluation. Definition of chewing and factors that affect it.. FIXED PROSTHESIS:  design, clinical crown, dental relationship between the arches, occlusion, mandibular-cranial relationship: Vertical Dimension (DV) of rest, occlusion DV, free space of rest, minimal phonetic space. Defects and excesses in DV. Horizontal dimension : mandibular-cranial ratio, centric position, maximum intercuspidation, centric occlusion, centric relationship.  Techniques for recording interarch relationships: Dowson, chin point, swallowing or free closing. Deconstruction techniques. Analysis and evaluation of clinical cases. Introduction to footprints (aided by teaching lessons with exercise) the alginates and how they must be treated to obtain the plaster model (done in practice). Study models and diagnostic ceratures. Joint analysis. Occlusors, articulators and profile determinants. Analysis of the different types of dental preparation. Imprint and working models. Realization of the different prosthetic crowns. EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

 Oral exam

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of study of each topic will be given during the course of the teaching activities.. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to design and carry out the rehabilitation of patients who require the restoration of the integrity of the dental arches with both mobile and fixed prostheses. The oral exam will be based on the ability to properly manage the development and implementation of fixed and mobile prostheses , with the aim of evaluating not only whether the student has reached an adequate level of knowledge and skills, but even if it has acquired the ability to critically analyze clinical-dental problems that could be presented during the examination.  The student must also demonstrate that he has acquired the ability to describe a prosthetic care plan clearly and with correct terminology. The assessment of the activity carried out during the internship will also contribute to the determination of the final grade
