AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Internal Medicine fundamentals AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The objective of the course is to provide to dental hygiene students a basic knowledge of the main, and most common, medical conditions managed in Internal Medicine. The student will approach fundamental concepts concerning the pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations and treatment/prevention principles of the diseases presented during the course. TEACHING METHODS The course is articulated in 20 hours of frontal lecture. For admission to the examination it is required that at least 75% of the lectures have been attended. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The “Internist's approach” to the patient (introduction, patient’s history, physical examination) Acute and chronic renal failure Asthma Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Hypertension Diabetes Atherosclerosis and related diseases (coronary disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease) Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism Bleeding Disorders Heart failure Sexually Transmitted Infections Oral manifestations of systemic diseases RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Didactic resources presented by the teacher (e.g. they will be available on the platform “Aulaweb”).
