OVERVIEW

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases, in particular of multi-system disease processes.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objective of the course is to provide to dental hygiene students a basic knowledge of the main, and most common, medical conditions managed in Internal Medicine.

The student will approach fundamental concepts concerning the pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations and treatment/prevention principles of the diseases presented during the course.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is articulated in 20 hours of frontal lecture.

 

For admission to the examination it is required that at least 75% of the lectures have been attended.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  1. The “Internist's approach” to the patient (introduction, patient’s history, physical examination)
  2. Acute and chronic renal failure
  3. Asthma
  4. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  5. Hypertension
  6. Diabetes
  7. Atherosclerosis and related diseases (coronary disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease)
  8. Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
  9. Bleeding Disorders
  10. Heart failure
  11. Sexually Transmitted Infections
  12. Oral manifestations of systemic diseases
