CODE 68401 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 2 cfu anno 1 IGIENE DENTALE 9289 (L/SNT3) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR MED/04 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: DISEASE ETIOLOGY TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course of General Pathology examines the study of the causes of disease and the possible consequent pathological process AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Provide the students with the fundamental elements about the causes of diseases and about how they act on cells and tissues AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Provide the students with the necessary knowledge to comprehend the mechanisms by wich the pathological agents act on the human organisms and the main consequences of these actions. in particular, the general etiology, the call damage and death, the inflammation the repairing of the tissues and the biology of the cancer cell. The students must acquire the ability to describe the various pathological processes, learn an adequate nomenclature, understand the meaning of the various pathological processes and their interactions TEACHING METHODS Teaching is divided into 20 hours of classroom lectures on all the topics of the syllabus. These topics are explained by the teachers through PowerPoint presentations and all the lessons are shared in Aulaweb and/or Teams platform. The teachers always recommend the use of a textbook to expand the overall view of the subject. Attendance in this course is mandatory. The frontal lessons could be carried out remotely in online mode using the Teams platform. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Causes of disease: Chemical and drug injury. Injury by physical agents (ionizing and non-ionizing radiations, thermal injury). Cellular pathology: Cell injury and cellular adaptations. Cell death: apoptosis and necrosis. Acute and Chronic Inflammation: Inflammatory cells. Phases of the inflammatory process. Chemical mediators of inflammation. Inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6 and TNF). Systemic effects of inflammation. Acute phase response. Classification and outcome of acute inflammation. Chronic inflammation. Tumors: Metaplasia, dysplasia, anaplasia. Classification and malignant characters. Staging systems and gradation. Chemical, physical and biological carcinogenesis. Metabolism and activation of carcinogens. Initiation, promotion, progression. Invasiveness and metastasis. Outline of tumor markers. At the end of the oral examination, teachers elaborate a mark deriving from the weighted average of the partial marks and from an overall evaluation of the student. Available dates for examination will be 2 for the winter session (January-February) and 4 for the summer session (June-September). In order to attend the oral examination, students will have to register on the website (https://servizionline.unige.it/studenti/esami/prenotazione) at least four days before the examination date. The exam could be carried out remotely in online mode using the Teams platform. ASSESSMENT METHODS Verification of learning is carried out through the oral exam, aimed at verifying the real acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes.
