AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course is aimed at future professionals graduated in Medical Radiology Techniques so that they know the basics of pharmacology. Acquire knowledge on the basic elements concerning the main stages of pharmacokinetics, from the absorption to the elimination of drugs and radiopharmaceuticals, and the mechanisms of action of drugs.

The main topics on the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals, their administration and elimination will be discussed.

Students  will have to know the general characteristics and the use of the principal contrast agents used in the various diagnostic investigation techniques.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures are held with the help of summary images of the topic that are made available to all students on Aulaweb. Particular attention is paid to the carrying out of calculation exercises both for a self-assessment of the student about his understanding of the subject matter, and to provide him with practical indications suitable for passing the final written exam.

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Overview of Pharmacokinetics: absorption of drugs with particular regard to the routes of administration.

Distribution and metabolism of drugs. Elimination of drugs. Essential pharmacokinetic parameters and their clinical significance. Overview of Pharmacodynamics, tolerance, intolerance and therapeutic index.

Contrast media barited, iodized, for magnetic resonance and  in ultrasound.

Radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine: Definition of Contrast and radiopharmaceutical, general considerations and clinical applications.
Adverse reactions to drugs and contrast agents and their prevention and management.
General information on tracers, from their production to clinical diagnostic-therapeutic use.
Distribution and metabolism of radiopharmaceuticals.
Notions of Nuclear Medicine in the clinical-diagnostic field.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination for the part of Pharmacology, takes place in written form and in 60 minutes with 16 multiple choice questions and 2 calculation exercises that provide an open answer. The student must correctly answer 10 multiple choice questions and at least 1 calculation exercise, without penalty for the answers not provided or incorrect. Exceeding the Pharmacology test completes the exam. The vote is unique and, taking into account the seriousness of the errors committed in the parts of the examination, the final result is agreed between the teachers involved in the integrated course.

 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment of the correct understanding of the topics covered takes place during the written exam with a series of written questions that are modified at each exam session, are formulated in different versions between students who occupy contiguous positions in the classroom and, as far as concerns the quizzes, contain a range of 5 answers of which only one correct. Open questions instead require the carrying out of simple mathematical calculations (proportions, fractions, etc.) to answer the question posed. Thus mnemonicity and copying of responses are discouraged, while the ability to actively apply the knowledge acquired during the course through reasoning and synthesis is valued.
