OVERVIEW

The Laboratory proposes a course of study, analysis, diagnosis and design, of a definitive level, of a building or architectural complex in Genoa or Liguria. Through lectures, seminars, with tributes from external experts and classroom work, the Laboratory will develop an experience similar to a real professional activity. The guided activities will tend to take place in groups and will be based on all cultural, technical and scientific references to the disciplines of conservation, restoration and compatible re-use of historic buildings of cultural significance. To this end, the knowledge, skills and abilities acquired in the context of the teaching of Fundamentals of Architecture (third year of the Bachelor's Degree in Architecture Sciences - L17) and of the Restoration Laboratory (first year of the Master's Degree in Architecture - LM4).

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Guided choice: Optional laboratory on restoration design, consisting of the Restoration and Structural Consolidation modules. The Laboratory offers an integrated design experience, in the field of protection, conservation, restoration and enhancement of the architectural heritage of interest and cultural value. Attention is paid to the fundamental cultural, theoretical and technical aspects for a correct management of the intervention process on the historical built. The project concerns a building or architectural complex chosen in agreement with the protection bodies.

PREREQUISITES

Knowledge of history in general and of history of architecture and art, in particular, as well as of the ideal and theoretical foundations of the disciplines of Conservation and Restoration, in their historical development. Knowledge relating to materials, architectural features and construction techniques of buildings, their degradation processes and, for the Construction Technique module, knowledge of the main ancient and contemporary structural concepts are also required.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists in the presentation and public discussion of the study, survey and analysis / diagnosis documents of the conditions of the building / complex object of the year's work and of those of the project for its restoration. This in light of the theoretical and operational contents addressed in the lectures, seminars and classroom work.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment of learning and the effective acquisition of the skills and abilities required will take place through intermediate checks during the year, individually and for working groups, of the studies in progress and of the analytical-diagnostic and design documents being prepared, as well as during the examination, with collective and individual exposure and discussion of the final papers, in the presence of external critics.
