OVERVIEW

This course (48 hours) aims to develop communicative competence in English at B1+/B2 level of the CEFR, with particular emphasis on productive language skills (written and oral expression), metalinguistic competence, intercultural competence. English for Specific Purposes (ESP): expansion of vocabulary related to the technical-scientific sphere with particular regard to the fields of architecture, design, landscaping, etc.

Places for this course are limited. Students interested in participating are requested to send an e-mail with a very short motivation letter (no more than 3/4 sentences in English) to the lecturer (sandra.vlasta@unige.it).

AIMS AND CONTENT

Development of the learners’ communicative competence in English at the B1+/B2 level of the CEFR, with particular regard to productive language skills (written and oral expression), metalinguistic competence and intercultural competence.  

English for Specific Purposes (ESP): expansion of the vocabulary relating to the technical-scientific area with particular regard to the fields of architecture, design, landscaping, etc.

B2 Vantage or Upper-Intermediate

  • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.
  • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

For further information on the various levels from A1 and A2 to B1, as well as higher ones, such as B2, C1 and C2, please check the British Council website either in Italian or in English.

In addition, during the course, students will acquire:

- the ability to manage their social interactions

- collaborative attitude

- awareness of their own learning strategies

- organisation and evaluation of personal learning

- understanding of their own needs and ways of developing competences

- ability to identify and pursue learning objectives.

PREREQUISITES

Communicative competence in English at B1 CEFR level.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures (48 hours) in presence. Lessons will include a range of different activities, such as group work, discussions, presentations, exercises (grammar, audio-visual, listening, reading, speaking), peer evaluation, peer learning, problem-based learning etc. 
The course includes a revision phase in which presentations to be prepared for the final examination will be developed in small groups.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Topics: from the technical-scientific sphere with a focus on architecture, design, landscaping, etc.
Preparation of a presentation on a topic of choice based on a project/course/workshop already carried out in the degree course.
Preparing a template for the final paper/presentation.
Repetition of grammatical contents, especially those useful for preparing and presenting a paper.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination: presentation of a project/topic with a presentation (pdf/ppt) and a script.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral examination will assess the productive language skills (written and oral expression) developed during the course.
Active participation in lessons.
