AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module aims to present the methods and tools of Italian architectural historiography in the context of international historiography. The lessons, of a distinctly methodological nature, will revolve around a series of exemplary cases, read and interpreted starting from the main points of the contemporary historical-architectural debate.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student will know the issues and concepts discussed during the lessons: the cultural coordinates of architectural projects; the political, social and identity dimension of building processes; the notion of cultural heritage and its reflections on architecture; the importance of historical contexts and the limits of ‘operational criticism’ (critica operativa); the method and tools of architectural history.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures. Attendance of lessons is not mandatory, but strongly recommended.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  • The urban contexts of contemporary architecture: the legacy of the industrial city; old and new patterns of development; trends of global change and models of resilience
  • The legacy of modernism
  • History of architecture as an autonomous discipline: the legacy of national traditions, the specificity of the ‘Italian school’, the new trends of international historiography
  • The ‘controversial city’ and the debate about town planning and urban renewal after WW2
  • Architecture, identities and cultural heritage in an historical perspective

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Given the approach of the course, there isn’t a single handbook that can substitute class attendance. For a general overview, and/or for more analytical studies it may be useful to consult:

  • L. Benevolo, History of modern architecture, Cambridge 1996
  • J.-L. Cohen, The future of architecture since 1889. A worldwide history, London, Phaidon, 2016
  • D. Ghirardo, Italy, Modern architectures in history, London 2011
  • M. Tafuri, F. Dal Co, History of World Architecture, 2, Modern Architecture, New York-Milan, Rizzoli/Electa, 1986
  • B. Zevi, Architecture as space, How to look at architecture, New York 1993

The teacher is available to students for any orientation and bibliographic information, and for further advices about classes and exams.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will focus on the issues and problems discussed during the lessons, as well as on a book chosen among those suggested by the teacher at the beginning of the course.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The notes taken during the lessons as well as the slides available on aul@web will be useful but not entirely sufficient to prepare for the exam, and will need to be supplemented by the critical study of one of the books indicated in class.
