AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The "Architectural Theory" course is a two-credit module within the "Architecture Studio 1" at the first year of the Master's degree in Architectural Composition. This course delves into the theoretical aspects of architecture, focusing on its ontological dimensions. The primary objective of this course is to provide students with a deep understanding of the theoretical foundations of architecture. It aims to explore the essence and significance of architectural composition in the broader context of architectural studies. Students will engage with core theoretical questions such as the nature of architecture, the principles of architectural composition, and the role of some specific issues, such as language, proportion, symmetry, and the likes, in design. The course seeks to enhance students' ability to critically analyze and integrate theoretical concepts within their architectural projects. TEACHING METHODS The course methodology includes theoretical lectures and interactive project review sessions. While the lectures will cover fundamental questions and concepts in architectural theory, the review sessions will allow for the application of these theories in the students' ongoing studio projects. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course combines ex-cathedra lectures focusing on theoretical issues, particularly those of an ontological nature, with periodic reviews of the project developed in the studio. These sessions aim to provide in-depth insights into the theoretical aspects of the students' projects. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Specific reading materials and bibliographic references will be provided during the course to support the theoretical lectures and project reviews.
