AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to master, by putting them into practice, the practical and theoretical tools that lead to the definition of an architectural form. Students learn to evaluate and control the quality of spaces in relation to the context in which they operate.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

LEARNING OUTCOMES
An architectural project is a complex activity where technical, measurable knowledge and critical and artistic skills, which are inherently only evaluable, are applied.
The architectural project is developed under the guidance and supervision of the faculty, who work to facilitate the student's consciously autonomous choices.
The student is guided in developing their analytical and critical judgment skills through which they will be able to formulate a clear, coherent, and valid design proposal.
These skills are inherently complex and require a long learning process. Therefore, the curriculum includes multiple design studios over the course of which these skills can mature and reach perfection, enabling the student to formulate an autonomous and conscious judgment.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
The ability to exercise critical judgment in architectural design can be developed through various moments, logically distinct but occurring simultaneously in each design phase.
The student is asked to develop: a critical analysis of the material and symbolic context in which their intervention is placed; a critical analysis of the design theme, also through the analysis of similar projects developed by other architects; a critical analysis of their own design proposal in order to improve it autonomously. The ability to critically read the context and design proposals, whether their own or others', is one of the main teaching objectives, from which the student's conscious autonomy of judgment is formed.
The ability to succinctly communicate the fundamental reasons for their proposal and - based on these - the rhetorical-dialectical ability to respond to criticism constitutes another teaching goal.
By acquiring the various skills listed, the student arrives at the formulation of a coherent and clear architectural proposal, thus achieving the learning outcomes of this course.
In this course, due to their interrelation, it is not possible to attend one of the three modules independently of the others.

PREREQUISITES

A fundamental prerequisite is knowledge of current and past cultural, political, and social contexts. Additionally, knowledge of the history of architecture is necessary. Good writing, reading, and comprehension skills are also required.

TEACHING METHODS

The course combines theoretical lectures, which provide interpretative frameworks for practical activities, with hands-on laboratory activities that dominate in terms of time and allow testing the validity of theoretical approaches.
Students typically develop the architectural project in groups of three, while they tackle collateral exercises individually. Independent work helps students better understand their abilities; group work facilitates discussion and the development of critical and judgment skills.
Attendance is mandatory. If absences exceed 20 percent of the classes, students will not be allowed to take the exam.
Eating in class and using computers, tablets, phones, or similar devices during lessons is prohibited; notes must be taken by hand.
Analysis and design projects are constantly reviewed to guide students and correct their work as they progress.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The first part of the course is primarily focused on strengthening analytical skills; the second part is dedicated to developing a system of coherent design choices.
This year's course theme is the architectural design of student housing in Genoa.
The course, through its overall educational objectives and specific content, particularly by fostering the student's conscious and autonomous judgment, contributes to achieving all the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The specific bibliography will be distributed during the course.
