AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide a framework of contemporary tourism phenomenon observed from the perspective of positive and negative effects on the landscape. The acquired skills will be useful to develop the aptitude to understand tourism from the perspective of sustainability.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • summarise the basic elements of the contemporary tourism phenomenon;
  • understand the territorial dynamics that generate the tourist offer;
  • understand the motivations that encourage tourists to travel;
  • analysing the development processes of the various forms of tourism;
  • analyse the ways in which tourism is organised and developed in different regions of the planet, with particular reference to the Italian context;
  • analyse some aspects related to the communication strategies implemented by tourist resorts to promote their heritage;
  • interpreting the role of landscape as a key factor in the tourism promotion of territories;
    interpreting the impacts of tourism on the environment, landscape and social processes.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching will be organised alternating between frontal and participative teaching.
Frontal teaching will be aimed at identifying and understanding basic knowledge; participatory teaching will be based on problem-based strategies aimed at stimulating the ability to analyse some problems related to contemporary tourism.

Students who have properly filed a certification of disability, DSA or other special educational needs are advised to contact both the contact person and the lecturer at the beginning of the course, in order to agree on teaching and examination methods that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory tools.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The module will cover the following topics

  • the figures of contemporary tourism: arrivals, presences, flows and catchment areas;
  • tourism and experience: the authenticity of tourist places;
  • the impacts of tourism: the space visited and the space consumed; the measurement of impacts; the protection of natural heritage and its tourist promotion;
  • tourism and geographical storytelling: communication of tourist locations, narratives of places, images as tools for promoting the landscape.
  • the role of the landscape in the development of territories;
  • tourism in nature and rural landscapes as an opportunity in Italy and Liguria.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral exam.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral interview will allow to evaluate:

  • the understanding of knowledge;
  • the development of skills useful for analysing the contemporary tourism phenomenon in real contexts.

Evaluation criteria are:

  • the quality of the exhibition;
  • the correct use of the appropriate vocabulary;
  • the ability of critical analysis, even on possible cases discussed.
