The course provides knowledge useful to design interventions for the maintenance, conservation, restoration, modification and reuse of existing buildings, both monumental and non-monumental, with particular emphasis on the construction and executive detailing aspects, also in relation to the values of the existing building, the needs of the users, the relationship between conservation and the insertion of new architecture/equipment.
The training course is aimed at the acquisition of the following skills:
- to be able to apply the knowledge acquired in the analytical pathway of the first year to correctly set design problems of recovery, redevelopment and reuse.
- to be able to identify, analyse and "weigh" the architectural and construction values of the Cultural Heritage, in order to set up conservation, redevelopment and reuse projects in a shareable manner
- being able to select maintenance, restoration, consolidation and redevelopment methods and techniques on the basis of the problems identified from time to time;
- being able to recognise possible conflicts between improvement and redevelopment objectives (e.g. energy) and the conservation of previously identified values.
The teaching methods are conducted in a participative way with the students, based on Problem Based Learning (PBL). During each lesson, a specific problem is set, to which specific knowledge is imparted, in order to provide space for active discussion on current projects.
During the meetings with the students, topics concerning the problems related to the values and state of preservation of existing buildings are addressed in order to deal with a correct and conscious design process, including construction details, such as
- structural concepts of existing buildings
- vertical and horizontal elevation structures
- roofing systems
- windows and doors and glazing
The topics concerning the relationship between the project for the recovery of the existing building and the project "of the new" vary from year to year, depending on the project theme chosen.

The verification of learning takes place by means of a final oral examination common to all subjects in the School of Specialisation, during which the trainees present the design work carried out during the second year to a single commission.
The oral examination verifies the ability to correctly and consciously tackle projects of modification, conservation, restoration and reuse, with particular attention to the technical solutions that can be adopted.
The examination evaluation parameters are:
- the ability to set up a critical reasoning relating to the state of conservation of an entire building or parts thereof;
- the ownership of the technical vocabulary;
- the ability to set up a design problem;
- the ability to identify possible ways of transformation compatible with the conservation of historical-architectural and material values.
