OVERVIEW

The course, which aims to understand the direction that needs to be taken in order to rebalance the debate and bring the values of diversity and inclusion back to the centre, is open to all students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Genoa. At the end of the course, students who have attended 75% of the lectures and passed the final exam can be awarded 1 CFU, which will be added to their diploma supplement. Students must request the inclusion of code 10790 CITIZENSHIP TRAINING in their curriculum. Details of how to do this are available at https://servizionline.unige.it/studenti/formazionecittadinanza.

Alternatively, students can request that the seminar be included in the free credits, if this is provided for in the regulations of their course.

For those who wish to carry out service-learning and volunteering activities (75 hours), 3 CFUs will be recognised

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim is to contribute to the deconstruction of stereotypes related to migration.

After a first local edition of the project, the second edition of the project, carried out in collaboration with Unige and the University of Milan Bicocca, produced an impact assessment that verified the effectiveness of the proposed model in the territories, providing empirical evidence of the impact of programmes aimed at combating prejudices and changing attitudes.

The project, now in its third edition, continues thanks to the support of the Archetti Association, maintaining its commitment to promoting a change in narratives and the deconstruction of stereotypes related to migration.

This new edition maintains the peer-to-peer approach as a central element. For this reason, in addition to the classroom activities in secondary schools, a course is planned for university students to deepen the project's themes, with the possibility for participants at the end of the course to also become active as volunteers in a service-learning pathway, working alongside Helpcode trainers in the classroom as peer educators, creating a shared and inclusive learning context.

The aim remains to raise awareness among the younger generations, promote awareness and dialogue on the issue of migration and contribute to the creation of a more open and welcoming society.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to answer these questions and in particular to

Understand the power of mental schemata to identify existing challenges and a possible way forward;

Increase knowledge of the phenomenon of migration and develop awareness of how prejudices operate and how to challenge them.

Develop transversal skills for civil coexistence and initiate a process of intercultural confrontation and dialogue.

To stimulate awareness of multiculturalism and ethnic diversity within and outside the learning context.

Encourage young people's active participation in service-learning and volunteering activities in order to contribute to integration processes.

Service Learning Pathway

The proposed activity aims at carrying out

Activities of planning and design of workshop activities to be carried out in the classrooms of Genoese high schools together with teachers from the association Helpcode.

Activities of coaching and implementation of the workshops in the classes participating in the initiative, together with the educators of the association.

Developing and updating the content of the activation pathways through action research activities and updating data and reference sources.

TEACHING METHODS

 

The workshop will consist of 15 hours of seminar lectures with compulsory attendance of at least 75%, the remainder being devoted to individual in-depth study of specific topics using materials provided by the module tutors.

There will be 1 presentation and introduction session of 3 hours, 3 thematic sessions totalling 8 hours, 2 sessions for the development of the final project of 2 hours each, facilitated by a tutor. The sessions will combine interactive face-to-face approaches, group work and opportunities to reflect more broadly on changing narratives of migration.

You will develop the following soft skills

Functional literacy: The ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form, to adapt one's communication to the context, to use different sources and tools, using teaching methods such as debate, think pair-share, case/problem-based teaching, group teaching.

Personal, social and learning skills Ability to manage oneself and one's emotions, to establish and maintain positive relationships with others, to work in teams and to resolve conflicts. Ability to develop autonomous learning strategies, adapt to new situations and reflect critically on one's own learning. Use of metacognition techniques, group feedback, personal motivation.

Citizenship: the ability to act as a responsible and participatory citizen in a democratic society. It includes awareness of rights and responsibilities, the ability to participate actively and responsibly in social and political life through civic education activities, simulations of democratic processes, group work on social issues and proposals for volunteering.

Social competence: Ability to manage one's own social interactions, cooperative attitude, constructive communication in different environments. Use of didactic methods such as think pair sharing, case/problem teaching (when carried out in groups).

At the end of the course, students who have attended at least 75% of the lectures and have passed the final examination may be awarded 1 CFU, which will appear as an additional CFU in the Diploma Supplement. Students must request the inclusion of code 10790 TRAINING IN CITIZENSHIP in their curriculum at the Student Counter. The procedure for inclusion in the curriculum can be found at https://servizionline.unige.it/studenti/formazionecittadinanza.

Alternatively, students can request that the seminar be included in the free credits, if this is provided for in their degree programme. In this case, the council of the course in which the student is enrolled is responsible for assessing the possibility of recognition.

For those who wish to carry out service-learning and volunteering activities, 3 CFUs will be awarded following the experiential activity requested by the student.

These acquired CFUs will appear as additional CFUs in the Diploma Supplement and may also be recognised by the course as curricular CFUs, other activities if considered important for the achievement of the intended educational objectives.

Service Learning Course

EXAM DESCRIPTION

At the end of the course, students who have attended at least 75% of the lectures and completed the final exam may be awarded 1 additional CFU in the Diploma Supplement.
