OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide analytical tools required to understand and critically examine the economic reasons guiding the actions of consumers, enterprises and public operators in the tourism sector.

Some basic aspects of microeconomics and macroeconomics will be considered, as well as problems concerning the identification of the components of tourism in the context of national accounts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main aim of the course is to provide students with a good knowledge of the models and theories of the economics and policy of tourism

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge and understanding - Students must acquire adequate knowledge of the peculiarities of the tourism phenomenon, in order to critically understand the economic and political-economic mechanisms that determine the structure and evolution of the sector.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding - Students must learn to apply the acquired knowledge and understand problems related to the organizational and strategic choices in the tourism sector.

Judgment Autonomy - Students must be able to use both conceptual and operational skills acquired with autonomy of judgment and skills in different contexts of application.

Communication Skills - Students must acquire the technical language ad terminology of the discipline to communicate clearly and unambiguously to specialists and non-specialists.

Learning Abilities - Students must develop adequate learning skills that will allow them to elaborate autonomously the key issues of the discipline, especially in the working contexts where they will operate.

PREREQUISITES

At the beginning of this course, students are supposed to have the command on some basic principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics (such as consumer and firm theory, macroeconomic equilibrium, among others).

The tourism sector.  Some statistical data.

Tourism in national accounting, tourism satellite account

 

Part II – The microeconomics of tourism

The choice of the tourist as a consumer.

Production in tourism. Seasonality in tourism

The tourism markets

 

Part III – The macroeconomics of tourism

The tourism expenditure multiplier

The crowding-out effect of tourism

 

Part IV – International tourism

Monetary aspect and competitiveness

 

Part V – The state intervention and the public organization of tourism
