OVERVIEW

Most of the activities related to tourism, from the identification of target populations to the definition of the tourist offer to the management of tourists during their stay, imply relational skills and basic psychological knowledge to optimize the results of these processes.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to highlight some psychological themes that may be useful on the one hand to understand the needs of different types of tourists, and on the other to implement correct and effective tourism communication. Topics such as perception, thought processes, emotions, personality traits and communication processes will be addressed with reference to the psychological skills that a graduate in Tourism Science should acquire during his or her training in order to best identify the needs of potential clients, prepare different packages according to the type of tourist, and effectively communicate the proposed offer.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Teaching has as its main objectives:

  • make the student capable of facing up to the issues involved in the various aspects of tourism through the “psychological approach”;
  • become aware of the close relationship between humans and their environment;
  • provide the basic elements related to some research topics in psychology closely related to the topics addressed by the psychology of tourism.

Learning outcomes

  • Knowledge and understanding: students must acquire adequate knowledge and an effective understanding of the fundamentals of  psychology that are relevant to the construction and communication of the tourist offer.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: students should be able to apply the acquired knowledge and to understand and solve problems related to the design of tourist offers declined in function of the specific target.
  • Autonomy of judgment: students must know how to use both on a conceptual and operative way acquired knowledge with independent judgement and skills in different contexts.
  • Communication skills: students must acquire the technical language typical of the discipline to communicate clearly and unambiguously with stakeholders specialists and non-specialists.
  • Learning skills: students must develop appropriate learning skills that enable them to continue to deepen in an autonomous way the main topics of the disciplines, especially in the working contexts in which they will operate.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Psychology of tourism: written test (multiple-choice test on the computer in the AulaWeb environment) at the end of the course which focuses on texts 1 and 2 and on what was said in class and not covered by the texts. Those who pass the test can take a decision test based on the simulation of an interview with potential clients of a tourist agency. The average of the marks obtained in the two written tests represents the final grade. The "reduced" programme is valid only for end-of-course tests and summer appeals. As of the September appeal, the distinction between attendants and non-attendants is no longer valid.

Psychology of tourism: it is permitted to take the examination for a maximum of 5 times over the assessment at the end of the course. The failure to pass the examination on the fourth and fifth attempt involves recording a negative outcome and, consequently, the inability to take the exam in. a.y. 2025-26. The student who falls, in this case, may take the exam again in.a.y.  2026-27.

Students who fail an exam can sit it again at the successive exam date.
