The course plays an important role within the curriculum of studies because it provides the basic skills to face the advanced geological studies. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provides the basic knowledge on Earth’s dynamics and on the following main themes: tectonics, magmatism, metamorphism, sedimentation, lithostratigraphy in the various geodynamic environments. The course also provides the necessary practical background for recognition of the main tectonic and sedimentary structures in the field and for rock recognition and classification. PREREQUISITES No prerequisites required. TEACHING METHODS Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sara Ferrando (sara.ferrando@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison. TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD LAURA FEDERICO Ricevimento: The students' reception will be arranged directly with the teacher. MICHELE PIAZZA Ricevimento: The students' reception will be arranged directly with the teacher. LESSONS Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The exam consists of: - a practical test related to the solution of graphic exercises, the recognition of rock samples and the description of a petrographic classification; - an oral test consisting in answering the questions asked by teachers on topics dealt with during the course. The final grade is given by the weighted average between the pratical and the oral tests. Two sessions will be available in the winter period (January-February) and four in the summer period (June, July, September). ASSESSMENT METHODS The pratical test will verify the effective acquisition of the necessary knowledge for solution of simple geological problems, the recognition of the fundamental rock types and the mastery of the classification schemes. The oral test will focus on the topics covered during the lectures, the exercises in the classroom and the fieldwork. It will aim to assess not only if the student has achieved an adequate level of knowledge, but also if he has acquired the ability to discuss fundamental geological processes by integrating the notions received from both modules. The ability to expose the arguments clearly and with correct terminology will also be evaluated.
