CODE 72873 ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026 CREDITS 5 cfu anno 1 SCIENZE GEOLOGICHE 11899 (L-34 R) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR GEO/02 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER Annual MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: GEOLOGY 1 AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching provides the basic knowledge on the following main themes: sedimentation and lithostratigraphy in the various geodynamic environments. The course also provides the necessary practical background for recognition of the main sedimentary structures in the field and for rock recognition and classification. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The attendance and participation in the planned training activities (lectures and exercises in the classroom and fieldwork) will allow the student to acquire the general knowledge of Stratigraphic Geology and Petrography necessary to face the studies in the field of geology. Specifically, the student will be able to: • define the main rock classification schemes • define the main geological cycles • explain and interpret the main litho and chronostratigraphic elements • explain and interpret depositional environments TEACHING METHODS The course is blended and consists both of lectures in the classroom, exercises in the classroom and fieldwork. Attendance to all planned activities is strongly recommended. Lectures are done through multimedia presentations. The laboratory exercises are aimed at the practical application of the theoretical knowledge acquired during the lectures. In particular, group and individual exercises will be developed concerning the use of rock classification schemes and the application of stratigraphy principles and lithostratigraphic correlation rules. The fieldwork takes place within the regional territory and is aimed at the recognition of rocks and of the main sedimentary structures and environments. Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sara Ferrando (sara.ferrando@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The Rock Cycle. Wilson Cycle. Introduction to rock forming minerals. Introduction to magmatic process. Introduction to the sedimentary process and to sedimentary rocks. Udden-Wentworth grain-size scales. Classification of sedimentary rocks. Bedding, beds and laminae. Introduction to sedimentary structures. Accumulation and subsidence.
