AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to introduce the student to the effective and conscious use of spreadsheets for the processing, visualization and analysis of data.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course uses software tools with interface and documentation in English.

The course introduces students to the use of the LibreOffice suite (in particular the Calc spreadsheet) and Excel, with the aim of using them to process, visualize and analyze data, with practical examples on the processing of experimental data or data acquired from databases available online.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching takes place over 13-14 weeks, each of which normally includes 3 hours of  lessons and/or guided workshops (students are required to have a laptop, and will receive assistance to install the necessary software).

At the end of the semester there could be a pre-exam, which replaces the exam.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course includes introductory lessons followed by guided workshops, which will be videorecorded.

In detail, the topics covered are:

  • basics on operating systems and file systems
  • use of compressed archives (zip format)
  • general features of spreadsheets
  • insertions, import (csv format), editing and formatting of data
  • online information: open data, thematic data banks, bibliographic data banks (optional)
  • charts for displaying tabular data
  • formulas, functions, absolute/relative references, mnemonic names
  • filters to hide/rearrange data
  • pivot tables to create aggregated data
  • export of sheets in pdf format (optional)
  • generalities and terminology on data
  • data classification
  • what-why-how paradigm
  • data clean-up
  • join operations
  • elements of discrete statistics
  • visualization tools
  • statistical tests
  • predictive methods (optional)

The teaching material (including any video recordings) will be made available on aulaweb.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of a practical test that requires the analysis of data provided by the teacher (those who have passed the pre-exam are exempt).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam verifies the ability to properly use spreadsheets.
