AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This module aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge on topics of chemistry and organic chemistry, focusing on the identification of the main classes of organic compounds, on explanation of the main reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry and on the discussion of structure/properties relationship of synthetic and natural macromolecules. 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will provide an in-depth knowledge of the reactivity and properties of organic molecules. After a short review on the main functional groups, the course will focus on reactivity and reaction mechanisms for the conversion of different classes of compounds, including the reactivity of polyfunctional macromolecules of biological and biomedical / technological interest.

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

-explain the general mechanisms of reactions in organic chemistry,
-evaluate, based on its chemical functional groups, the reactivity of an organic compound, 

-predict the products of specific organic reactions,

-describe, with examples, the reactivity of (bio)macromolecules and polymers,

-evaluate the macroscopic properties of simple and complex organic compounds in relation to their structure.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures, exercises and discussion of problems on chemical reactions and properties during class hours.

Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (DSA), for disabilities or other educational needs, are invited to contact the teacher and the School/Department disability representative at the beginning of the course to agree on any teaching methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Review of main functional groups in Organic Chemistry (hydrocarbons, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, amines, aldeydes, ketons, carboxylic acids and derivatives, benzene), IUPAC nomenclature and classifications. Main organic reaction mechanisms: homolytic and heterolytic bond cleavage, nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition, elimination, nucleophilic addition, nucleophilic acyl substitution, chemical reactivity of benzene. Oxidation-reduction reactions. Synthetic polymers and  polymerisation reactions. Molecules of biological interest (carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins, triacylglycerols, nuclei acids) and their reactivity.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral (partial) exam. The exam related to the first module should be taken before the exam of the second module. The final exam result is the weighted average of the marks obtained in each module.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

After completing this course, the student will be able to manage skills and operating method for the approach of problems related to reactivity, properties and structure of organic molecules and biomolecules. The oral exam will verify the ability of the student to analyze and compare properties and structure of the main classes of compounds in organic chemistry including synthetic polymers and biomacromolecules. During the exam, the student should be able to discuss reaction mechanisms of different classes of compounds and to predict reaction products, describing them in general and critically analyzing specific problems. The correctness and completeness of the answers and also the quality of the exposure, with the use of the appropriate specialized lexicon, will be evaluated.
