OVERVIEW

The course is designed to help students gain confidence and ability in their reading skills for specialised psychological texts. It uses authentic material taken from courses form British and American universities. During the course the students will become acquainted with a new  register of language  by studying  lessons and articles which discuss the theories of major psychologists. This will enable them to acquire the  necessary skills and ability to read effectively in English as well as learning  specialised academic terms 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to help students acquire the skills necessary to understand and translate academic English fluently and efficiently. The laboratory work in small groups using authentic teaching material from psychology classes familarizes the students with the lexis and syntax of texts of this nature

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Lingua e Traduzione Inglese is a course designed to help students become acquainted and familiar with academic English of a psychological nature. The laboratory work in small groups using authentic material from psychology classes  will enhance the reading skills of the students and consolidate their lexis.

 

PREREQUISITES

Students should have a B1 level of English  to be able to tackle with confidence  the articles to be studied. Therefore students without  recent B1 certification  or better should contact me at the beginning of the first semester.

TEACHING METHODS

Lessons and   small groups in the laboratory  with access and reference to online material

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

We will be using e texts  which address psychoanalytical, behaviorist, and humanist schools of thought. There will be  laboratory sessions for students in small groups based on these texts with additional material to help reinforce fundamental grammar issues. Students will also  be encouraged to read around the subject in an automonous fashion so as to acquire greater confidence and familiarity with the subjects dealt with.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is written with an eventual oral for attending students whilst non attenders will have to complete  a series of  assignments prior to enrolling for the written exam .

The  written exam consists of comprehension exercises designed to assess the students' familiarity with academic lexis

An example of the written exam will be posted on the online noticeboard. Non attenders should make an appointment to decide on the contents of their exam.

Advanced students will do an oral exam instead of a written

There is no mark for this exam only pass or fail.
