AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Provide students with general knowledge of first aid in emergency situations.
  • Offer a broad understanding of the most common conditions treated in the Emergency Room and the related first aid interventions.
  • Introduce topics related to criteria for evaluating pediatric patients in the Emergency Room (Triage) and their hospital admission process.
  • Develop students’ ability to recognize cardiopulmonary arrest.
  • Introduce students to the fundamental techniques of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Help students identify partial and complete airway obstruction due to foreign bodies.
  • Provide knowledge of essential maneuvers for addressing airway obstruction caused by foreign bodies.

TEACHING METHODS

Interactive frontal lectures with slide presentations and practical exercises on mannequins.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

1st Lecture: Activities/organization of a Pediatric Emergency Room - Triage

2nd Lecture: Most common pediatric medical conditions

3rd Lecture: Most common pediatric traumatic and surgical conditions

4th Lecture: General understanding of PBLS (Pediatric Basic Life Support) and airway obstruction due to foreign bodies, based on the ERC 2021 Guidelines (European Resuscitation Council)

5th Lecture: Practical training session with an IRC (Italian Resuscitation Council) instructor

Oral exam.

 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will be based on:

  • A general question to assess their ability to present information clearly and effectively.
  • A specific question to examine reasoning skills and the ability to apply knowledge to solve problems.

Students with DSA (Specific Learning Disabilities) or other certified special educational needs may arrange an oral examination format with the professorr. They must send a request for exam adaptation to the Area Coordinator and the professor at least 10 days before the scheduled exam date. Additionally, they are entitled to 30% extra time for the exam completion.
