AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Regular attendance and active participation in the proposed learning activities (interactive lectures, practical exercises, and simulations), combined with individual study, will enable the student to:

a. Develop awareness of the habilitation issues related to the neonatal period and preterm birth.

b. Acquire knowledge of the main habilitation strategies aimed at promoting the neurobehavioral development of the newborn through personalized, family-centered care.

TEACHING METHODS

This 10-hour course adopts interactive teaching methods through the use of: lectures, practical exercises in small groups, problem-solving activities, and audiovisual materials aimed at promoting critical observation of video content.

The course is structured into lectures and interactive sessions delivered by the instructor. The theoretical content will be presented during the lectures and subsequently applied in practical exercises through the use of educational videos and problem-solving tasks. Practical group work will provide students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the theoretical concepts and develop critical skills in evaluating available sources.

Teaching materials will be made available to students at the end of the course.

Students with certified Specific Learning Disorders, disabilities, or other special educational needs are encouraged to contact the instructor and the School/Department disability advisor at the beginning of the course to agree on appropriate teaching arrangements. These accommodations will respect the learning objectives of the course while taking into account individual learning needs.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course includes the presentation and discussion of the following topics:

  • Parent–newborn communication and relationship: bonding and the attachment process

  • Brain, motor, and sensory development of the fetus, newborn, and infant

  • Neurobehavioral assessment: The Synactive Theory of Development

  • Neurobehavioral assessment – Introductory overview of neonatal observation methods: NBO (Neonatal Behavioral Observation), GMs (General Movements), NIDCAP (Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program)

  • Preterm birth: The preterm or at-risk newborn and the role of the rehabilitation professional in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

  • Neurodevelopmental follow-up

  • Promotion of development and Developmental Care: Personalized, developmentally appropriate habilitative care and tailored family support (Family-Centered Care)

This course contributes to the achievement of the following United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • Goal 4: Ensure inclusive, equitable, and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

  • Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
