CODE 106513 ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026 CREDITS 2 cfu anno 1 ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION 11930 (LM-4 R) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ICAR/14 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: ARCHITECTURE STUDIO 2 AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The aim of the course is to analyse and reflect theoretically on the project in order to develop critical and self-critical capacity and to contribute to the student's personal development and to the more general development of the discipline. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The aim of the course is to provide students with the theoretical and critical tools necessary to analyse, discuss, and frame design approaches at different scales. By exploring selected themes in architectural theory, history, or criticism, students will learn to situate design practices within broader cultural, and social contexts. The course is designed to complement design studios by offering conceptual frameworks that can support either practical design investigations or purely theoretical inquiries. By the end of the course, students will be able to develop independent critical positions and apply them to contemporary architectural questions. TEACHING METHODS The course combines lectures, seminars, and guided discussions. It promotes an interactive environment where students are encouraged to debate, question, and critically evaluate different theoretical perspectives. Sessions will include readings, presentations, and collective discussions of case studies or thematic issues chosen in coordination with studio topics or independent research interests. SYLLABUS/CONTENT This 2-credit course is structured around selected themes in architectural theory and criticism. The syllabus is intentionally flexible to allow alignment with ongoing studio projects (for instance, by supporting their operative design themes) or to enable stand-alone theoretical investigations. Topics may include architectural composition, typology, history and theory of housing, critical approaches to technology, or cultural and social dimensions of design.
