AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge of the chemical behavior of the elements of the s, p and d blocks of the periodic table, with particular attention to the relationship between aspects of bonding and properties of inorganic compounds. Introduction to solid state inorganic chemistry and binary phase diagrams. Laboratory activity that allows you to acquire the skills necessary for the synthesis, characterization and purification of inorganic compounds

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge and Understanding

At the end of the course, the student must have acquired a solid basic knowledge of the properties of the main elements, their compounds, and the reactivity that characterizes them. This objective will be achieved through not only theoretical lessons but also classroom exercises.

Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding

Ability to use the information acquired during the course to solve problems related to the structure, properties, and reactivity of inorganic compounds. Ability to establish correct reactivity-structure correlations for inorganic compounds. The assessment of the acquired skills will be carried out through classroom exercises and examinations.

Autonomy of Judgment

The student must demonstrate having acquired critical skills in addressing problems and exercises related to the structure, properties, and reactivity of inorganic compounds. Ability to apply the acquired knowledge to chemical phenomena and interpret them correctly. The achievement of this objective will be verified through classroom exercises and examinations.

Communication Skills

Acquisition of expository skills characterized by clarity and proper use of language. The student must be able to correctly present definitions, fundamental concepts, and theories related to the course content and discuss the given problems clearly. These skills will be evaluated during the examination

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures including innovative teaching methods and exercises aimed at verifying the state of learning. The lectures will be conducted with the aid of presentations that will be made available to students on the course's Aulaweb platform.

The purpose of the laboratory is to familiarize the student with simple inorganic chemistry processes and to connect what has been learned in the classroom with practical experience.

Attendance at lectures is not mandatory, although it is strongly recommended. Attendance at all laboratory activities is mandatory. Missed laboratory sessions can be made up due to force majeure by arranging with the instructors.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Completion of Knowledge on Chemical Bonding: Ionic bond, ionic radii, typical ionic structures, lattice energy, metallic bond, free electron theory, band theory, conductors, insulators, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors. Ionic, metallic, atomic, molecular, and covalent solids. Structure of elemental substances. Some classes of the main inorganic compounds (oxides, hydrides, hydroxides, oxoacids, halides) and variation of their properties in the periodic system.

Structure of Silicates: Production and characteristics of silicate-based inorganic materials (zeolites, glass, ceramics, etc.).

Recap of Thermodynamics of Heterogeneous Systems: State variables and state functions, extensive and intensive quantities, characteristic equations, Gibbs-Duhem equation, leading to the phase rule and phase equilibria in heterogeneous systems, with an in-depth study of significant phase diagrams in binary liquid-solid systems.

Electrochemistry: Electrochemical cells. Definition of anode and cathode. Galvanic elements. Standard redox potentials. Electromotive force of a cell and Nernst equation. Electrolysis.

Preparation of Metals: Through reduction processes, thermodynamic aspects, Ellingham diagrams. Preparation of metals by electrolytic processes. Methods of metal purification. Preparation, purification, and properties of some important metals (Cu, Al, Ti).

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

During the course, teaching material will be published (Aul@WEB), but integration with appropriate texts is essential.

Any university-level text of "General Chemistry" on the market or available in the library of the M.F.N. School of Sciences. it is valid, as long as it is recent (from this century). For each student it is more useful and productive to search, for each topic, for the text in which the teaching approach is most pleasant and stimulating, rather than relying on a single textbook.

Having said this, and keeping in mind that the following list is certainly not exhaustive, some titles and a non-binding selection of texts are the following:

Callister, Rethwisch - SCIENZA ED INGEGNERIA DEI MATERIALI – EdiSES

Bertini, Luchinat, Mani - CHIMICA INORGANICA- EdiSES
