AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Training activities that provide the knowledge of advanced scientific English for Italian students AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the course the student will be able to: understand the main ideas of complex texts on specialised scientific topics (articles, case studies, presentations) and specific terminology related to materials science and technology (sustainability, chemical processes, plastic materials) express him/herself with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party on a variety of scientific and technological topics. PREREQUISITES Being a master's course, students should have acquired, during the three-year-degree course, a B2 level of English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). TEACHING METHODS The lessons are held online and in the classroom and are given entirely in English with the aim of developing their language skills. They envisage practical exercises, communicative activities and problem-solving through collaborative learning: pairwork, groupwork and individual study, thereby enabling the development of the literacy and functional competence. Lessons are enhanced by the use of multimedia and online resources. The teaching material is available on Microsoft Teams and/or Aulaweb. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Listening: listening activities to develop the ability to understand speech of varying lengths and accents using a wide range of spoken materials (current affairs, presentations) Reading: reading activities to develop the ability to understand different types of extracts (books, magazines and newspapers) and to identify key points, details and text structure. Speaking: commmunicative activities to develop the degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party and actively participate in discussions on scientific topics and give presentations. Supplementary material is provided at the request of student workers or students with SLD to meet their specific needs. The exam may be taken online in cases provided for by the University Regulations. There will be 3 exams available for the winter session (end of January-February) and 4 exams for the summer session (June, July and September). ASSESSMENT METHODS There will be 1 final oral exam which will assess the learning of the theoretical aspects and the ability to reason. The discussion will test the use of specialized scientific vocabulary through an accurate and clear of the phenomena and concepts studied. The final grade is given as a Pass or Fail and, to pass it, the candidate must score a minimum of 18 out of 30.
