AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Goal of the teaching activity is to verify that the student has achieved an adequate level of understanding and mastery of a student’s free-choice topic. The topic selected may be related to the student's thesis or, alternatively, relate to other content consistent with the learning outcomes of the MSc. The student’s capabilities to present scientific topics by expressing himself/herself clearly and correctly in oral form will also be assessed.

During the exam, the student must demonstrate that he/she is able to:

- illustrate the state of the art of the selected topic in a public seminar making use of proper electronic supports;

- select and present properly a bibliography suitable for the description of the state of the art;

- answer the questions asked by the examination board adequately and thoroughly.

Based on the objectives described, the teaching contributes to the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals of the ONU 2030 Agenda: Goal 4. Quality Education, Goal 5. Gender Equality and Goal 12. Responsible consumption and production.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The student is asked to present a seminar, lasting a maximum of 30 minutes, in a public examination session before the Examination Committee and the students enrolled in the MSc.

Four examination sessions will be scheduled for each academic year so as not to overlap with the conduct of other teaching activities. For those who will be doing their thesis abroad and choose to prepare the Focus Group seminar on their off-site activities, extraordinary examination sessions may be scheduled before the graduation exam.

The seminar will be evaluated by an Examination Committee of varying composition and consisting of at least two commissioners appointed by the MSc. The thesis supervisor(s), the first co-supervisor, and the Focus Group lecturer/tutor will not be allowed to serve on this committee.

The Examination Committee will verbalize a judgment of suitability if it finds adequate exposition clarity and sufficient depth of the subject matter in question. It also gives an evaluation, awarding a score from 0 to 1 also in fractional terms, which will contribute to the determination of the final examination grade.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, are asked to email both the professor in charge and professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it ), the contact person for disability at the Polytechnic School.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The purpose of the class is to verify the students’ acquired ability to know, understand, illustrate and critically discuss a topic consistent with the learning outcomes of the MSc.

The criteria followed by the Exam Commission for the evaluation are: mastery in arguing the topics, effectiveness in both verbal and graphic expression by means of proper electronic supports.

The students’ ability to answer questions of the Exam Committee correctly and to participate in the topics discussion will also be assessed.
