It aims to develop students’ ability to process a text using the Word for Windows application. It is also intended to provide the knowledge required to retrieve legal information electronically through the Internet. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims at providing the basic principles and technologies of Computer Science (e.g. hardware, software and computer networks), with practical aspects represented by use of an operative system (and in particular the file management); the use of a word processing application for creating and formatting documents, and the legal information retrieval via Internet and the World Wide Web service (i.e. offline and online databases, especially the CED the Corte Suprema di Cassazione, the databases of the Italian Parliament, the Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato and the European Union will be considered). AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES In particular, the course will enable students to: Acquire full awareness of the main IT concepts relating to the basic principles of information technology, computer use and file management, and computer networks; Be able to edit a text using the Word for Windows application; Know and correctly apply the main techniques for retrieving legal information. PREREQUISITES Basic concepts of ICT Computer use and file management Word processing Web browsing and communication TEACHING METHODS The programme corresponds to modules 1, 2, 3, and 7 of the ECDL. The detailed syllabus for the contents of the individual modules can be found on the AICA website, which also provides a list of recommended textbooks from which students may freely choose the most suitable one for exam preparation. The theoretical part consists of a test made up of 15 multiple-choice questions, designed to demonstrate the candidate’s knowledge of the following topics: a. Basic concepts of information technology b. Computer use and file management c. Computer networks The practical part, which may be taken only by those who have correctly answered at least 12 questions in the theoretical part, consists of the following tasks: Editing a text in Word format, appropriately following the instructions provided by the lecturer, and saving it in a directory created on the desktop. Searching the Web, using an appropriate search engine such as Google, Yahoo, Virgilio, etc., for a document of legal interest, and saving it in a specified format. ASSESSMENT METHODS The examination methods are designed to assess students’ actual knowledge and acquisition of basic IT concepts, as well as their ability to correctly use editing and information retrieval programs. More specifically, in relation to the first part, students must demonstrate that they have understood the main concepts relating to information technology, the most significant notions concerning the use and components of the computer, as well as the main methods for using files and managing computer networks. In the second part, students will be asked to apply the above theoretical notions in practice by processing a Word file and searching for digital documents in databases accessible via the Internet.
