AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Provide students with the basic knowledge regarding the chemical/physical characteristics of the main natural, artificial or synthetic polymers used in dentistry for the preparation of prosthetics, fillings, dental impressions and surgical sutures.

TEACHING METHODS

Theoretical lessons are aimed at simplifying the comprehension of the topics treated. In this context the teacher will use educational powerpoint presentations and, if necessary, he will have the opportunity to deepen those parts of the topic that may prove more difficult for the students to understand. Before starting a new lesson, to facilitate students to learn several connected sections, a brief summing up of the previous lesson will be carried out.

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the School/Department before class begins, in order to arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning outcomes.

VERY IMPORTANT: any request for compensatory tools and adaptations in the exam MUST be done within 10 working days before the date of the exam according to the instructions that can be found at https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/comunicazioni

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course of Science and Technology of Polimeric Materials consists of the following sections:  Historical notes; Definition of polymer; Phenomena of isomerism; Determination of the average molecular weight; Origin based classification; Reactions of polymerization; Study of polymers solutions; Study of solid polymers; PMMA: general characteristics and employment in dentistry; Other polymers used in dental technology for the preparation of dental prostheses, dental fillings and dental impressions; Summary table of the applications of polymers in the medical field.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

For this course there is not a specific book recommended, because the teacher will provide on aulaweb the complete notes for students.
