The course, divided into two modules, focuses on an in-depth exploration of two literary civilizations of the Middle Ages, characterized by both continuity and innovation in relation to the Greek and Latin literatures of Antiquity.
Module Byzantine Literature: overview of some crucial Byzantine literary texts, from reading a manuscript to understanding some layers of the text, towards a philological/literary commentary.
Module: Medieval and Humanistic Latin Literature and Philology
This module offers an in-depth study of medieval and humanistic Latin literature through an examination of the historical context, literary genres, key authors, and major works, 6th to 15th century. Particular attention will be given to the transmission of texts and the processes that ensured their preservation and reception. A philological approach will be central to the course, including direct readings and an introduction to the methods of textual criticism.
