AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides basic knowledge about real numbers, the concepts of limit, continuity and derivability for real functions of one real variable. The student is able to apply this knowledge to the solution of simple practical problems in the pure and applied sciences

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student knows:

  • the properties of real numbers and subsets of real numbers;
  • the definition and properties of limits;
  • the definition and properties (local and global) of continuous functions;
  • the definition and properties (local and global) of derivable functions.

On completion of the teaching, the student knows how to

  • use mathematical language and logical-deductive reasoning;
  • reproduce and understand some demonstration methods;
  • solve simple exercises.

TEACHING METHODS

Traditional lectures and exercises at the blackboard, group and guided exercises.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written and oral examinations: access to the oral examination is only possible by passing the written test.  For both tests the pass mark is 18/30.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written examination ascertains the student's ability to solve simple exercises relating to the calculation of limits and derivatives, the application of theoretical results to the study of properties of real functions of a real variable. The test consists of three exercises, which the student must complete and demonstrate the ability to argue correctly.

The oral examination ascertains that the student has made up for any gaps in the written examination and that he/she can express him/herself correctly using elementary logic and the technical language learnt.

FURTHER INFORMATION

If classroom equipment permits and provided that student attendance is not compromised, lessons are broadcast and recorded on the MS Teams platform. The Teams channel code is available on AulaWeb.

Lecture streaming is a support tool to be used exceptionally in the event that the student is unable to attend the lectures in person.

Lectures recordings serve as a support tool for individual study.
