OVERVIEW

The course is divided into two modules. Energetics and Applied Thermodynami, Heat Transfer.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course describes in the Energetics section the energy resources, energy sources and their final uses. It also offers fundamentals on nuclear plants. In the Applied Thermodynamics section it explores the use of general balance equations (mass, energy, entropy and exergy), the properties of fluids and exchange equations. It provides the criteria for calculating the energy/exergy efficiency and losses of processes (direct and inverse cycles and their components, energy recovery, etc.).

For the Heat Transfer module the main objectives of the course are:

  • to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the principles of heat transfer;
  • to study heat exchange phenomena in components and processes of particular interest for mechanical engineering;
  • to introduce the main methodologies used in the thermal design of components and systems.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of the main mechanical engineering topics (maths, geometry, calculus, thermal and fluid dynamics, heat transfer, energy systems, and so on) is needed.

TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists, for each module, in an oral test divided into the discussion of several topics of the module itself. The grade obtained in the teaching will be the weighted average of the grades awarded in the two modules in which the teaching is divided.
