AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching aims to deepen the study of Statistical Physics of near-equilibrium systems. Some interesting topics such as Onsager relations, thermoelectric phenomena, kinetic theory of gases, and hydrodynamics of simple fluids will be addressed. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Educational objectives are related to the problems of statistical physics of out-of- equilibrium systems. We will start with Callen's thermodynamics. The distinction will then be discussed between slightly out-of-equilibrium systems, with Onsager's fundamental rules (symmetry of the kinetic coefficients). At this juncture we will study some fundamental problems: the Seebeck effect, the Peltier effect Later Brownian motion, Boltzmann equation, linear response theory and hydrodynamic problems The aim of this course is to make students capable of tackling non-trivial problems in Statistical Physics. . PREREQUISITES Structure of matter 1 TEACHING METHODS I will follow a series of slides that i have written in the past years. SYLLABUS/CONTENT This course is an introduction to: Thermodynamics Linear thermodynamycs of irreversible processes Thermoelectric effects Brownian motion Kinetic theory Hydrodynamics Coorrelations and linear resonses Mean field theories and critical phenomena RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Forster " Hydrodynamic Fluctuations, Broken Symmetry and Correlation functions" Pottier "Out of equilibrium statistical physics" Chaikin, Lubensky " Condensed matter physics" Landau, Lifshits " Vol 5, Vol 10" TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD NICODEMO MAGNOLI Ricevimento: The teacher meets with students each day. You can contact him at the email magnoli@ge.infn.it. LESSONS LESSONS START Towards the end of september. Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION Oral part. One question decided by the student and a second one decided by me. ASSESSMENT METHODS The assessment method will be given by the promptness to the first question and skill to the second one. FURTHER INFORMATION Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Sergio Di Domizio (sergio.didomizio@unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison.
