OVERVIEW

The course aims to develop students’ skills in searching, analyzing, and critically appraising scientific literature, promoting an evidence-based approach to nursing care applied to first aid interventions in nursing emergencies..

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Understand the principles of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN).
  • Formulate focused clinical questions using the PICO model (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome).
  • Perform bibliographic searches in the main scientific databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Scopus, etc.).
  • Analyze a scientific article
  • Understand the principles of emergency and urgent nursing care management, and implement first aid interventions

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of 10 hours of training delivered through the following teaching methods:

• Interactive lectures.
• Computer lab sessions for practical exercises in bibliographic research.
• Analysis and discussion of scientific articles in small groups.

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

The Evidence Based Nursing Process

  • Steps of the EBN process.
  • Building a clinical question using the PICO framework.
  • Types of research questions (diagnostic, therapeutic, prognostic, care-oriented).
  • General notions of first aid in the field of urgency.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment of learning takes place exclusively through the final exam, which aims to verify the student’s actual acquisition of the expected learning outcomes.

To pass the exam, and therefore obtain a grade not lower than 18/30, the student must demonstrate:

  • the ability to formulate a coherent PICO question,
  • accuracy in searching for and selecting sources,
  • understanding of the structure and quality of a scientific article.

They contribute to the final grade, expressed out of thirty:

  • The ability to address the required topics in a cross-cutting and critical manner;
  • Accuracy, clarity, conciseness, and fluency of expression;
  • Mastery of the subject matter;
  • Use of appropriate terminology.

A grade of 30/30, with honors if applicable, will be awarded when the student’s knowledge and skills in the subject are excellent.
