The main objective of the teaching is to provide the student with the basic elements related to the main general characteristics of laboratory tests and the significance of some classes of disease markers that can be measured in the clinical testing laboratory.
Both General Clinical Pathology and Special Clinical Pathology concepts will be addressed with special reference to some of the main laboratory tests, concerning different pathophysiological situations, with their main uses and meanings.
Frontal theoretical lectures (10 hours of coursework) on the topics covered in the program. Attendance is required for at least 75% of the hours of frontal lectures.
Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the teacher and the School/Departmental Disability Liaison at the beginning of the course to agree on possible teaching arrangements that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns.
In case of medical emergencies or weather alert, lectures will be held in online teaching mode or otherwise according to University guidelines.
Blood: corpuscular components; CBC and its significance; plasma/serum
Plasma protein assay: significance and main plasma proteins assayed
Markers of inflammation: significance and assay of major markers used in the clinic
Enzymatic and nonenzymatic markers of cell damage and their clinical correlations
Tests for evaluation of the hemostatic process

The exam will be conducted through an interview with the student to assess his/her knowledge and ability to connect the concepts learned.
During the exam, the rules regarding the evaluation method of students certified as DSA or with other educational needs indicated by the university will be respected. (e.g.: additional time in the case of written exams, use of concept maps to be viewed for approval by the teachers at least one week before the exam date).
In the event of a health emergency or weather alert, exams may be held remotely or according to the directives of the University.
The basic elements of the subject must be known for the examination to be considered sufficient.
The learning assessment takes place through the final oral exam which aims to ascertain the actual acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes.
The student will be examined on the contents of one or more chapters covered in class, with questions aimed at assessing his/her learning and his/her ability to make connections between the topics covered.
For the final assessment, the following requirements will be assessed:
- level of knowledge of the topics covered in the questions
- ability to present and adopt appropriate specialist terminology
- ability to deal with the topics in a transversal and critical manner
- ability to connect the different topics covered in class
