AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Cognitive learning of the main diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas and biliary system, both for medical and surgical interest. The student is expected to be able to recognize the physiopathological basis, the morphologic alteration and the clinical signs of the main diseases and their complications. Moreover, the student will have to be able to determine an evaluation and the prognosis.

TEACHING METHODS

 

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

There is a single exam for the integrated course. It consists of assessing the student's knowledge of the course objectives through an oral exam consisting of questions on the program of the subjects that make up the integrated course, with particular reference to the topics covered in class

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Learning assessment is based solely on the final exam, which aims to ascertain whether students have effectively acquired the expected learning outcomes.

Students must demonstrate that they:

  • are familiar with the demographic aspects of the main digestive system diseases in Italy and the EU, from adolescent to elderly patients, emphasizing the implications in the social and healthcare field.
  • know how to perform, with reference to international guidelines, the specific clinical approach methods for taking the medical history and performing a physical examination of gastroenterology patients.
  • describe, for aspects of particular surgical interest, the elements of diagnosis, prognosis, staging, and therapeutic and surveillance options for the most common conditions associated with gastrointestinal disorders, both functional and organic.
  • describe and illustrate the multiple clinical manifestations of hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases.
  • understand the impact of gastroenterological diseases of surgical interest on life expectancy and on the quality of life perceived by the patient.
  • be aware of the problems associated with alcohol abuse and the use of drugs that are harmful to the digestive system.
  • understand the interaction between mental disorders and the health of the digestive system.
  • communicate effectively with patients suffering from complex conditions such as psychosomatic disorders, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, advanced liver disease, and cancer.
