The Course of Hematology and Medical Oncology will focus on the clinical presentation and the treatment of the most common malignancies and non-oncological hematological diseases. In particular, the molecular mechanisms inducing neoplastic disorders will be addressed underlying the potential role of novel therapeutic targets (targeted therapy). Moreover, the diagnosis and treatment of selected diseases will be presented as well as the proper use of the most common laboratory and imaging tools.
Learning outcomes: General bases of hematopoiesis including molecular pathways governing stem cell differentiation, proliferation and self-renewal. Knowledge of selected neoplastic and non neoplastic blood diseases. Knowledge of modern diagnostic tools and novel therapeutic approaches including molecular target therapy. Epidemiology, diagnosis, staging and prognosis of selected solid tumors including primary and secondary prevention and chemoprevention. Knowledge of rational bases behind cancer treatment: chemotherapy, immunotherapy, ormonotherapy, supportive therapy and principles of anti pain medication and clinical research. Systematic overwiew of selected solid tumors with specific reference to early diagnosis.
Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.
