OVERVIEW

Are these your first days in clinical practice? In a clinic or on a medical ward you are about to see patients who will present to you with a variety of conditions, most likely the most common ones such as upper respiratory or urinary tract infections, influenza, gastroenteritis, hypertension, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease or COPD (or more than one of these conditions). Are you unsure about which medications you will have to prescribe and how? This course will enable you to assess the complexity of the most common conditions encountered in clinical practice and prescribe/modify and monitor the related therapies.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. To know the conditions most frequently encountered in clinical practice, the pathophysiological basis of their treatment
  2. To apply pharmacological knowledge to real life clinical conditions in the setting of multi morbidities.

PREREQUISITES

Knowledge of the pathology and clinical aspects of the main medical pathologies. Knowledge of the pharmacology of the main classes of drugs.

TEACHING METHODS

Compulsory attendance

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

  • Treatment of common general symptoms
  • Dietary approach to most common and prevalent clinical conditions
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Infectious Disease
  • Gastro-Intestinal disorders (with an emphasis on liver diseases and Inflammatory Bowel Disease)
  • Common Rheumatologic and Immunologic disorders
  • Disorders of the Endocrine System with an emphasis on Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular diseases, especially Cardiac Heart failure and Coronary Artery Diseases
  • Arterial Hypertension and other CV risk factors (such as lipids etc.)
  • Respiratory Disorders with a focus on COPD and Asthma
  • Most common Haematological disorders
  • Palliative Care

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Multiple choice written test (32-34 problems in 35 minutes,1 point for each correct answer, no penalty for errors, Laude will be given whenever total score >30).

The test can also be taken by Remote Web desktop connection should it be deemed necessary by the University of Genoa.
