OVERVIEW

First aid for medical students.

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge

The student will acquire the necessary skills for the clinical assessment and basic treatment of patients in emergency situations.

In particular:

- Principles of first aid and the organization of the emergency medical system

- Pathophysiological understanding of the main medical and traumatic emergency conditions.

- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques and use of the semi-automated external defibrillator (AED)

- Principles of rescue safety and application of standardized protocols.

 

Application of Knowledge

- The student will be able to promptly recognize clinically relevant signs and symptoms of emergency situations (trauma, dyspnea, chest pain, neurological changes, intoxication).

- The student will be able to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, positioning in the lateral recovery position, and airway clearance maneuvers.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is divided into 18 hours of theoretical lectures plus practical exercises in small groups of a maximum of 8 students for the practical part (BLS-D).

 

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written exam: 30 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 40 minutes.

Participation in the BLS-D practical exercise is mandatory and is a prerequisite for obtaining the qualification.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Learning assessment takes place through the final exam only, which aims to ascertain the student's actual acquisition of the expected learning outcomes.
