AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES To acquire a good level of communication skills and knowledge of “common core” English at the B2 (upper-intermediate) level. To learn the principles of technical English writing in order to produce a scientific text. To communicate effectively in English with patients and colleagues, overcoming cultural barriers, in order to practice the profession in an international context. The program follows the sequence of English courses 1 (focusing on the consolidation of basic English knowledge) and English courses 2–3–4 (scientific and medical English). AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course, therefore, does not aim merely to facilitate the reading of a medical text, but has a more ambitious goal: to prepare students to practice their profession in English and within a cultural and linguistic environment different from their own. TEACHING METHODS Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes. Classroom lessons SYLLABUS/CONTENT Typical dialogue situations from specific medical areas are presented, featuring the most common English expressions related to health. Preference is given to non-technical, everyday language that a patient might use. For all these scenarios, the course highlights the key differences between the Anglo-Saxon and Italian interpersonal approaches, in order to help establish trust and improve communication with the patient.
