AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will acquire the tools to analyze the impact of major pollutants in environmental matrices on ecosystems and human health, as well as develop skills useful for identifying and implementing prevention strategies aimed at protecting the environment and collective well-being. The concept that human health is intrinsically linked to the health of the environment will be developed and the One Health approach, an innovative perspective that considers human, animal and environmental health as one interconnected entity, will be explored. Students will explore the importance of an integrated approach to addressing global health and environmental protection challenges through the promotion of coordinated, interdisciplinary strategies.

TEACHING METHODS

Course topics are covered through lectures. Group work on environmental issues (exercises) will also be provided.

Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs), disabilities or other educational needs should contact the Lecturer and the School/Departmental Disability Liaison at the beginning of the course to agree on possible teaching modalities that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The main topics covered are:

Population health and its determinants. Relationship between environment and Health. One Health approach. Major physical-chemical and microbiological contaminants in environmental matrices, sources of exposure and health risks. Emerging contaminants. Environmental regulations, Legislative Decree 152/2006. Preventive measures for human and environmental health.

Written examination by means of multiple-choice test quizzes and evaluation of discussions of the exercises subject work.

Verification of learning takes place through the final examination, which aims to ascertain the student's actual acquisition of the expected learning outcomes.
