LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student is able to:

    know the historical origin, through an adequate knowledge of the past, of the problems that contemporary society has to face in the climatic field;

    know how to consciously orientate themselves in the problems linked to environmental protection and be able to make connections between present and past historical facts;

    to be aware of the challenges posed by climate change and thus be able to critically evaluate the responses of international society to these challenges;

    to find historical sources of various kinds, bibliographical and documentary, in particular digital, to be able to interpret them and use them for the preparation of a written text to be presented in class.

TEACHING METHODS

 The course will be taught in class, with lectures given by the Professor.

Attendance is not compulsory, although it is recommended.

Approximately two thirds of the course is devoted to lectures to enable students to acquire the necessary knowledge of the subject. However, students are encouraged to intervene critically, and are expected to present personal critical remarks.

Experts from the academic world are invited to give specific lectures.

A third of the course is devoted to classroom presentations, in Italian or English, of specific case studies agreed with the Professor. In addition to the acquisition of knowledge, this will allow students to develop specific transversal skills: the ability to work in a team and develop a leadership role; public speaking skills; the ability to summarise (in order to keep to the time allotted for the presentation); and critical thinking skills (since students are required to make personal observations and evaluate the sources used for the presentation). The presentation is carried out with the help of IT tools.

The teaching tools used are PPT presentations prepared by the teacher and available on the aulaweb and videos which will then be discussed in class.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course aims to provide students with a historical overview of developments in international environmental policy from the late XIX century to the present day.

The first part of the course will deal with the main actions and cooperation that have developed between states and the dynamics that have led to the formation of international organisations with environmental aims of different types.

The second part will be devoted to the evolution and characteristics of European environmental policy, which emerged first as a new policy of the European Community and then as one of the most important policies of the European Union.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination takes place orally.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

 The examination is oral. The final assessment will take into account the quality of the seminar work carried out by the student during the course in class. In particular, students attending the course will present a case study in class and the evaluation of this work will contribute to the final mark.

The Examination Committee is appointed by the Departmental Council and chaired by the professor in charge of the course.
