AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the module is to introduce the students to the fundamentals aspects of material science and to explore some related technologies relevant in the field of naval engineering. Ferrous and non ferrous alloys constitute a focus of the course considering their production, properties e testing methods. The technologies treated during the course are those related to electrochemical energy generators and to the corrosion and corrosion protection of metals.processes and post-production treatments, iv) analyze the causes of degradation of materials and protection methods especially with reference to metallic materials. The course will also analyze emerging materials and technologies regarding electric generators through fuel cells and batteries.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The specific learning outcomes on which the studend will be trained are:

Electrochemistry:  Nernst equation, electrode potentials, galvanic cells, electrolysers, faraday law.

Electric generators: Volta, Daniell, concentration, lead acid, lithium ions, alkaline, Ni-MH batteries, fuel cells and related exercises.

Metal extraction processes and theory for most important ferrous and non ferrous alloys.

Heterogeneous equilibria.

Thermal treatments of alloys.

Mechanical properties and testing methods.

Corrosion theory and corrosion protection of alloys.

Inspection types on shipyards to ensure quality managements.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lectures.

Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the teacher and the School's contact person for disability at the beginning of teaching to agree on possible teaching arrangements that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns. Contacts of the teacher and the School's disability contact person can be found at the following link Comitato di Ateneo per l’inclusione delle studentesse e degli studenti con disabilità o con DSA | UniGe | Università di Genova

Working students are ecouraged to contact the teacher to  receive indications regardig thei specific needs.

LESSONS

LESSONS START

Please refer to the web page of the Naval Engineering course of the Polytechnic School of the University of Genoa

Class schedule

The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

the exam is composed by a written test. Examples of the test are available on aulaweb page of the course.

The number of questions is typically around 15 and homogeneously distributed along the course program. Each question as the same weight and the total score is 31 which correspond to 30 with lode

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assesment method is based on the capability of the student to face the proposed questions or exercises. The knowledge of the requested topic with related details, the approach and method adopted to solve the asked question as well as the readiness to focus the requested topics are the points that will be considered in the evaluation of the student’s preparation.
