AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main properties and characteristics of the most prominent families of industrial chemical products as well as their manufacturing processes will be described and discussed. In particular, polymeric materials, lubricants and plasticizers, surfactants and detergents, dyes and pigments, solvents, pest control agents and other fine chemicals, will be considered. Procedures for calculating mass balances in complex chemical processes will also be discussed, with practical exercises.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities (lectures, exercises and numerical exercises) and individual study will allow the student:

1. to evaluate the characteristics required of organic industrial chemistry products and acquire a thorough knowledge of their properties and mechanisms of action.

2. to acquire competences and knowledge related to the formulation of the final products of the chemical industry

3. to evaluate, in practical terms and on the basis of the composition of raw materials, as well as the thermodynamic, kinetic, economic and environmental aspects, the reasons for the technical choices of the processes and products of the chemical industry.

4. to critically analyze the processes of organic industrial chemistry and carry out material balances on complex industrial processes.

TEACHING METHODS

The module is teached in blended learning mode and/or classroom lectures and a laboratory activity. The presentation of theoretical contents alternates with tutorials (exercises and numerical exercises) aimed at promoting the learning and discussion of specific examples of industrial chemical plants. The module foresees the visit to industrial plants and a laboratory

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it  ), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Polymerization processes and industrial polymers characteristics (plastics, synthetic fibers and elastomers) and monomer production. Properties and production processes of detergents, solvent, lubricants, surfactants, dyes and pigments and fine chemical products. Mass balances on complex industrial processes.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The teaching material (in English) will be made available to students through Aulaweb.
