OVERVIEW

The teaching unit discusses the key concepts related to antennas.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The unit aims to provide knowledge and skills on the operating principles and analysis and design techniques of antennas and antenna systems. These topics are discussed both from a theoretical point of view and with reference to different applicative examples.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the teaching unit is to provide knowledge and skills related to antennas, with reference to both their operating principles and their use in different applicative areas. In particular, the student will acquire knowledge and skills related to the following main topics: Fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation and antenna parameters; Linear antennas, aperture antennas, reflector antennas, printed antennas; Arrays of antennas and their application for the realization of MIMO systems, intelligent and reconfigurable antennas. At the end of the teaching unit students will be able to understand and analyze the problems related to the study and design of antennas, and will be able to apply these skills in different applicative areas.

PREREQUISITES

No specific prerequisites, in addition to the normal bases of mathematics, physics, and electromagnetic fields that the students are supposed to have from their B.Sc. backgrounds in engineering.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching unit includes lectures in the classroom, in which both the theoretical concepts and the applicative aspects concerning antennas will be addressed.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation. Antenna radiation parameters. Linear antennas (dipoles, monopoles, etc). Aperture antennas. Reflector antennas. Printed antennas. Antenna Arrays. MIMO, smart and reconfigurable antennas. Link between antennas.

This course contributes to the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda: Objectives no. 8 and 9.

The exam consists of several questions concerning the lecture topics.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam may cover the entire course program and it will be aimed at assessing the skills acquired by the students on antennas, with reference to both their operating principles and their use in different fields. The evaluation of the exam will be based on the quality of the presentation, the reasoning ability and the level of knowledge acquired by the students.
