OVERVIEW

The course introduces the fundamentals of qualitative research, with specific reference to health professions and the professional context of the Medical Radiology Technician. The aim is to develop a critical understanding of meanings, experiences, and relational dynamics in radiology, exploring methods, tools, and approaches to investigate subjectivity in healthcare settings.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of qualitative research and its differences from quantitative research.
  • Recognize the importance of subjectivity in the professional practice of Radiologic Technologists.
  • Critically analyze qualitative research articles.
  • Apply concepts such as reflexivity, credibility, and transferability when reviewing qualitative studies.
  • Be familiar with main methodological approaches: phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study.

The course includes 12 hours of teaching, comprising 8 hours of interactive lectures (introduction to qualitative research, methodological approaches, data analysis) and 4 hours of practical sessions (analysis of qualitative articles in radiological settings, case study discussions, and guided reflections).

·  Introduction to qualitative research in health professions

·  Epistemological and methodological differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches

·  Applications of qualitative research in radiology

·  Main approaches: phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, case study

·  Data collection techniques: interviews, focus groups, observation

·  Qualitative data analysis: coding, thematization, interpretation

·  Quality criteria: credibility, transferability, dependability, confirmability

·  Researcher’s role and reflexivity in clinical practice

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The learning process takes place through the evaluation of the assignments proposed during the teaching period and the discussion of the course content in the final exam, aimed at assessing the level of achievement of the course objectives.

The assessment of learning is carried out through the final exam only, which aims to verify the student’s actual acquisition of the expected learning outcomes.
To pass the exam and obtain a grade not lower than 18/30, the student must demonstrate the ability to:

·  Define the key concepts of qualitative research;

·  Describe the main methodological approaches and tools;

·  Critically analyze scientific articles in TRM context;

·  Reflect on the researcher's role and research ethics.

The final grade (out of 30) will consider:

  • Clarity, synthesis, appropriate use of terminology
  • Mastery of content
  • Ability to apply concepts to the TRM professional context

 

A final grade of 30/30 with honors will be awarded when the knowledge and skills in the subject are deemed excellent.
